BHIVA Scholarships

ViiV Healthcare UK Registration Scholarships to attend the 23rd Annual Conference of the British HIV Association (BHIVA)

ViiV Healthcare in collaboration with the British HIV Association (BHIVA) have made provision for scholarship awards to be made available to assist healthcare professionals to attend the 23rd Annual Conference of BHIVA which is to be held in Liverpool on 4-7 April 2017. The scholarship will cover the delegate's conference registration fee only, it will be necessary for applicants to book and organise their own accommodation, travel and purchase a Gala Dinner ticket if they wish to attend this event.

Applications will be reviewed and judged by a panel composed of members of BHIVA's Conferences Subcommittee and Education and Scientific Subcommittee.

BHIVA / AbbVie / SSAT (BASS) Exchange Scholarships

AbbVie in collaboration with the British HIV Association (BHIVA) and the St Stephen's AIDS Trust (SSAT) have set up an exchange scholarship for UK-based Specialist Registrars (SpRs) and Specialty Registrars (StRs) who are training in the field of HIV medicine and who are also BHIVA members. The exchange scholarship will enable winning applicants to travel to a developing or transition country to take part in a placement at an HIV unit for up to 2 weeks. It is anticipated that the programme will provide a unique opportunity to increase understanding of the treatment and management of HIV in the developing world and for scholars to disseminate this information and experience when they return to the UK.

BHIVA Travel Bursary Scholarships Funded By MSD Ltd

The British HIV Association have made provision for 8 scholarship awards funded by MSD Ltd to be made available to assist healthcare professionals to attend the forthcoming 24th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) to be held in Seattle, Washington USA on 13-16 February 2017. Scholarship awards are capped at a maximum of £2,000 each and are considered a contribution towards an award winner’s registration fee, travel and accommodation expenses.

BMS Exchange Scholarships in collaboration with BHIVA and SAHIVCS

Bristol-Myers Squibb in collaboration with the British HIV Association (BHIVA) and the South African HIV Clinicians Society (SAHIVCS) set up an exchange scholarship for UK-based Specialist Registrars (SpRs), Specialty Registrars (StRs) and non-medical healthcare professionals (e.g. specialist pharmacists, occupational therapists, dieticians, physiotherapists and nurses) who are working in the field of HIV medicine and who are also BHIVA members. The exchange scholarship enabled winning applicants to travel to Botswana to take part in a placement at an HIV unit for up to 2 weeks. The programme provided a unique opportunity to increase understanding of the treatment and management of HIV in the developing world and for scholars to disseminate this information and experience when they returned to the UK.

Gilead Exchange Scholarships in collaboration with BHIVA

Gilead in collaboration with the British HIV Association (BHIVA) have set up two exchange scholarships for BHIVA members.

Argentina Exchange Scholarships (Infectious Disease)

Applicants must be BHIVA members (minimum of 3 months).

UK-based specialist registrars or newly-appointed consultants (within the first 5 years of appointment) working in the field of infectious diseases are invited to apply.

The exchange scholarship will enable winning applicants to travel to Buenos Aires to take part in a placement at an Infectious Diseases Unit for up to 2 weeks. The programme will provide a unique opportunity to increase understanding and to gain experience of the treatment and management of infectious diseases overseas and for scholars to disseminate this information and experience when they return to the UK.

Brazil Exchange Scholarships (Clinical Trials / Research)

Applicants must be BHIVA members (minimum of 3 months).

UK-based specialist registrars, newly-appointed consultants (within the first 5 years of appointment) and non-consultant healthcare professionals (including nurses, pharmacists, clinical and non-clinical researchers) working in the field of HIV, who have a research role and are involved in clinical trials are invited to apply.

The exchange scholarship will enable a winning applicant to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to take part in a placement at an HIV unit for 1 week. It is anticipated that the programme will provide a unique opportunity to increase understanding and to gain experience in clinical trials recruitment and processes and, in addition, to obtain an overview of research methods from overseas. Scholars will be encouraged to disseminate this information and experience when they return to the UK.

Gilead/BHIVA Research Award


BHIVA members of a non-consultant grade including non-clinicians under the age of 35, were eligible to apply for the 2014 Gilead/BHIVA Research Award. Applicants must be members of the British HIV Association (BHIVA) for 2014, and have been members for a minimum of 3 months prior to the application deadline (member pre-20 June 2014). In addition, applicants must commit to renewing their membership in 2015.

Janssen Exchange Scholarships in collaboration with BHIVA, Barts Health NHS Trust and the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) 2015-16

Janssen, in collaboration with the British HIV Association (BHIVA), Barts Health NHS Trust and the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), have set up an Exchange Scholarship for a UK-based training grade doctor, pharmacist or nurse (working in the field of HIV medicine and who is also a BHIVA member) and a Zimbabwean trainee/physician.

The Exchange Scholarship will enable the winning UK applicant to travel to Zimbabwe to take part in a placement at a teaching hospital HIV unit for 4 weeks. It is anticipated that the programme will provide a unique opportunity to increase understanding of the treatment and management of HIV in the poorly resourced world and for the Scholar to disseminate this information and experience when they return to the UK.

The winning Zimbabwean applicant will be presented with the opportunity to observe specialist HIV multidisciplinary in-patient care in the NHS at Barts Trust in London for a period of 4 weeks. It is hoped that the programme will offer the Scholar the chance to work within a different health structure, noting challenges of the NHS.

Janssen Ltd in collaboration with the British HIV Association (BHIVA) made provision for 8 scholarship awards to be made available to assist healthcare professionals to attend the International AIDS Society conference which was held in Vancouver, Canada on 19-22 July 2015. Scholarship awards were capped at a maximum of £2,000 each and were considered a contribution towards an award winner's registration fee, travel and accommodation expenses.

Conference Scholarships

BHIVA awards a number of conference scholarships to help researchers, community representatives and other delegates attend the BHIVA annual autumn and spring conferences.

BHIVA Science Scholarships

BHIVA Science Scholarships are awarded to researchers studying for a PhD or MD and who have an abstract accepted for presentation at the annual BHIVA conference in the spring. Up to 10 scholarships are awarded and cover the cost of conference registration fees, and a contribution towards travel expenses and accommodation costs.

BHIVA Community Registrations and Scholarships

BHIVA Community Scholarships are awarded to 10 UK-based community registrants to attend the annual BHIVA conference in the spring. The scholarships cover the cost of conference registration fees and a contribution towards expenses and accommodation costs. In addition, BHIVA also supports the registration fees for approximately 30 community representatives to attend both the spring and autumn conference.
