We are shocked and saddened to learn about this case today, especially when highly effective antiretroviral treatment means that there is absolutely zero risk of passing on the HIV virus sexually. The latest figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA, October 2024) show that 98% of people diagnosed with HIV are treated and 98% of those on treatment have no detectable level of virus in their blood.
Testing for HIV is free from sexual health clinics and some locations in the community, with a finger prick test giving results in around 15 minutes. We would strongly recommend that everyone who has unprotected sex, without using a condom, and who does not know their HIV status, should test regularly.
HIV can affect anyone but today’s treatment means that people living with HIV, whatever their sex or gender, can expect to live a long and healthy life, without passing on HIV to sexual partners, and can safely have children.
